This is Toby, one of a brother and sister pair of throw-aways. Luckily, they found a wonderful new forever home. Toby was actually cooling his belly on a blistering Texas afternoon - I just thought that look had a little more to say.

Bassets, especially two at once, may not be everyone's cuppa but Toby is a perfect example of all the adorables waiting in shelters and pounds everywhere, every day ... from absolutely gorgeous purebreds to mutts so ugly they truly require special eyes of the beholder, and everything in between - kittens and cats of all descriptions too.

More often than anyone would believe the only get-rid-of excuse is shedding clashing with furniture - pathetic isn't it? Human stupidity will always top the endless list. That's not what this page is about though. I'll be be adding more pics and happy ending stories soon. Send yours: LibbyK9@aol.com or MarthaJones1@aol.com (subject line: adoption)

Human stupidity! That is it! I'm sure you deal with this a lot, it just makes no sense to me. I keep a few pictures of dogs up for adoption (at the local shelter) posted on my cubicle walls at work. One guy asked me if they took cats. He thought a stray that was hanging around his house was pregnant. I told him he could take her to a vet to be spayed. He said he'd shoot it before he did that.

An attitude like that won't ever make sense except that it shows a person was not raised with respect for animals. That's why I try to do as much as I can on here to get to some of the idiots. Very cool keeping pics posted, eventually you will get an intelligent question that may very well lead to an adoption. In the meantime, you actually have done some good by talking about abortion. That guy sounds like the type of ass who will be drinking with his buddies and say, "You won't believe what some some dumb chick told me about that damn cat ... " Bound to make an impression somewhere else down the road.

Before anyone starts screaming murder, what do you think happens when one more litter is dumped by moronic parents after the kiddies got to see the miracle of birth?

And picture this (or explain it to the chronically clueless): a beloved pet eating one or more offspring. Even under perfect circumstances there'll be blood and guts all over the place - that's a guarantee. From Spay/Neuter myth-busting list: http://www.therealmartha.com/puppiesaresocu/index.htm

Things to keep in mind when contacting a rescue organization

We are not here to make you feel better about what you are doing, we are here to help your dog if we can.

Your excuses we have heard before - some of us have been in the same situation that you are telling us you are in but the action that you are taking did not even cross our minds.

We will try to help your dog. We will try to find someone who deserves and returns the love and loyalty that your dog has to give.

We will not pat you on the back, tell you it's OK or give you any other warm fuzzy feelings. To us, you are the lowest form of life on the planet - you are abandoning a family member to an uncertain fate for your own convenience and we sincerely hope that you do not have a disabled human family member because there is no reason to think you would do otherwise with them.

That last sentence get to you? Want to tell us the dog is not a family member? Then you don't deserve to be called a human being and your dog will be better off whatever fate befalls it rather than existing with you.

If you need help with your dog, ask for it. We will help you with training, finding rentals that will accept dogs, vet expenses, and all those other things. But if you want to abandon your dog, have enough guts to just say so, don't give us the some old bullshit.

The following was in response to a page about a dog surviving the gas chamber. Quentin made national news, and as far away as Australia. I made the page because I could not believe Animal Control here (St. Louis) was still operating in the dark ages. The last I heard, "In Defense of Animals will donate $5,000 to begin a fund to eliminate the gas chamber as St. Louis' primary way of euthanizing stray dogs ... "

Find the rest of the story and related links: http://www.therealmartha.com/dogfunnies/index.htm Yes, that does say funnies, the idea was roping in those who ordinarily would not go anywhere near a taste of reality - you'll see. I have zero scruples when it comes to whatever it takes to educate.

Dear Martha,

I thank you and everyone else involved for your efforts in bringing this issue to light. At this time however I'm working out of the country and don't know what I can do "physically" to support this worthy cause, other than to tell my story of stray adoption and hope that you will forward it on to others and perhaps inspire them to the possible rewards of accepting the helpless into our homes.

While of course, no one can claim that every case might turn out as positive as mine, we must all consider the chance.

Three years ago while sitting on my deck, I saw a black streak from the corner of my eye. It was quite a skittish young dog. For the next few days I would see her around from time to time. Then one day I saw her sitting on my neighbor's driveway. When I came home from work hours later she was still there. As I found out, my neighbor had given her a biscuit. I called to her and while she was quite shy, after several minutes she came up to me. Once I gave her a few rubs on the head she was comfortable, but I could tell she was hungry. Not having much I could give her I brought out a few slices of bread which quickly disappeared. The next morning she was on my deck when I left for work. I told her I would pick up some food on my way home and if she was still there, she could have some. Sure enough there she was, and she got her dinner. That night I let her in. The next morning my house was still in one piece. Before going to work I let her out to do her business, then gave her a bowl of food and told her if I came home from work and nothing in the house was disrupted she could stay. What would you guess I came home to? Nothing out of place, no messes on the floor, nothing chewed up, just a very content dog happy to see me.

Black Dog (I couldn't think of a better name) is still with me. Never has she caused any problems. Very calm, content and loyal, the best four-legged friend I've ever had. And to think, someone obviously abandoned her. If not for the fact that I showed her a little compassion and a lot of faith she would have most likely been picked up by the pound and very likely put to sleep. Whether it be in a humane or inhumane way, the death of such a wonderful animal would be a tragedy. But never known, if I had not given her the chance to have a good life. So I beg of anyone who reads this, please visit your local animal shelter and consider offering a chance at life to an animal who might just be your future best friend.

Sincerely,

Justin

No doubt someone is thinking, oh my, that wasn't "legal." To which I will say, Go bitch up somebody else's tree.
