It Is The Soldier
By
Charles M. Province

soldier who.jpg (61372 bytes)

The words above appear - without credit - on several pages in this series. I will be correcting that omission as soon as possible. For a start, Charles M. (Mike) Province is the original author (I've seen and may have used other versions). When Mike contacted me, I asked what inspired him, "I got tired of the morons in the late '60s and wrote the poem in hopes that it would remind them of where the authority behind their rights comes from." Right on Mike! Those few lines pack one helluva punch, unfortunately, still much-needed by too many people. I am especially appreciative of my freedom to publish; I'm very careful to respect and not abuse that privilege. Please help by notifying me when you run across any placement I've missed crediting. Thanks!

Back to Mike, founder and president of The George S. Patton, Jr. Historical Society: http://www.pattonhq.com/, and author of The Unknown Patton, Patton's Third Army, and Patton's One-Minute Messages ... my nosy self also asked what prompted him to form the society, "I was stationed at Patton Barracks in the early 1960s and got interested in earnest then."

The site is well done and extremely interesting, particularly the research on that famous speech - I'll see you there.

In the beginning of a change the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot. ~ Mark Twain

The reason for "Blood of Heroes" web site: http://members.cox.net/classicweb/Heroes/info.htm

Excerpt: If you are not willing to defend this Great Nation, even taking up arms if it is necessary, then who will? If you will not defend America, that is your choice, but sit in silence and do not criticize those brave and valiant individuals who have the sense of duty, the measure of courage and the determination of heart to protect America, and I might add, your cowardly soul.

When I checked the other link above, it was temporarily down. A note suggested doing a search for the phrase Remember the blood of heroes on Yahoo to get a long list of sites featuring the presentation. Google also produces a long list, probably any search engine will.

WAR news toon.jpg (27689 bytes)

Do not believe everything you see and hear.

When military news is limited, most* of the media drags out any old rotten thing to chaw, over and over again. This effort began shortly after 9-11 as a mailer to friends and family aimed at squashing hype, hoaxes, BS in general. I included ideas for anyone who wanted to get involved and make a difference as well as opinions, mine and from others. Feedback was positive, and growing as the mailer made the rounds. Aol aggravation sent me running back "home" to making pages which now offer a wide variety of links, funnies (yes it is OK, in fact, necessary to take smile breaks), tips, easy recipes and whatever else pops up to cheer and make life as we now know it a little easier on us all, critters too.

What will not be included is any blame or rehash. History can not be changed. We have a situation, no matter who or whatever caused it, we must go forward. I loathe politics, such garboo will only be used as necessary reference. Religion is my second least favorite subject, although I have tried to present a variety of viewpoints. Arguing about who is right or wrong is pointless and counter-productive on any issue - more than ever, we must stand united.

*I'm trusting FOX these days, other than the vainglorious geraldo of course. Was only a matter of time before he blew it anyway. One idiot, no big deal - the regulars and their guests are believable. No problem about waving the flag either, that suits me just fine.

Wicked funnies to heavy thinkers, 'toons and great graphics, valentine and veteran stuff, critters, recipes, a few New Year's leftovers (silly to serious) ... the usual variety, in no particular or logical order

The link above is the last "official" WAR page. I hate politics worse than ever now. I'm back to my "regular" format - concentrating on the "normal" happenings that make us all crazy. I will still be featuring patriotic links and some news items.

It would be impossible and unreasonable to attempt to keep up with outside links on older pages. Certainly many snail mail addresses for support projects may no longer be valid. All information, including editorial, will stand as a general record. Please let me know of any updates or dead links you may find. Recent "temporarily unavailable" messages are particularly aggravating and are appearing more frequently each day. Inaccessibility problems are usually due to newly established greed policies on formerly free servers.

A lesson in respect, forwarded e-mail from an unknown source:

When Hurricane Isabel was bearing down on Washington, D.C., Washington did what it often does - panic! The federal government was closed as were the area's schools - even though up until 7 p.m. the day was only rainy with brief gusts of wind.

While everyone else was running for cover, there was a different character on display at Arlington National Cemetery, "home" to 260,000 veterans. It is also the site of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which was built in 1921 to honor those who died for our country, but whose remains have never been identified. The Tomb is watched 24-hours-a-day by the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, known as The Old Guard.

Cemetery officials were in a dilemma. The Old Guard has never abandoned its post guarding the Tomb. But as Isabel slammed into the area winds hit 75 miles an hour and the rain was torrential. The cemetery officials, gave the Old Guard permission to leave their posts for safety sake.

The soldiers refused to leave. Staff Sergeant Alfred Lanier said the Tomb was something "we cherish." Sgt. Christopher Holmes said leaving the Tomb is "never an option for us" and added he was prepared to die while guarding it. As Eisenhower asked when he surveyed the bravery on the beaches of Normandy, "Where do we get such men?"

Evidently several versions of the above are circulating. Find more and extra details here: http://www.snopes.com/military/isabel.htm

Your work is to discover your work and then, with all your heart, give yourself to it. - Buddha

No, I'm not a Buddhist. It doesn't matter what I am. Who I am is a person making use of common sense from many sources. That happens to be the line I used to open my first mailer. Oh what fun it is to quote myself - I must be famous. Nosirree folks, this here is a one-nag sleigh, although I couldn't pull any of this off without the courtesy of many supportive, contributing elves. It is an open sleigh. Tell me your thoughts. If they're well organized and make a good case, I'll print them too. I really don't care what you believe in or practice as long as you know why.

All comments and contributions are welcome, with a clearly defined subject line. Unknowns will be deleted.

"Hey there, hi, this is great ... " subject lines do not cut it - that's what spammers use. Due to at least 10 tons of junk coming in every day - when I don't recognize sender name and the subject line is iffy, I delete. Downloads, from anyone, even you my friend, also have to be automatic deletions. Most people do not realize their scanners can't catch the latest virus/worms. Embedded images or copies of doc. files are welcome. Typing in all caps is not. It's extremely irritating and should never be used unless you mean to be screaming, which is even more irritating. I will not read, no matter the subject. If you have a great article or essay you haven't seen everywhere, go ahead and send the first few lines. I will ask you to retype the whole thing if I don't already have it in proper form. BTW, double spaces between sentences, broken lines or any sloppy spacing are also major editing pains. Don't even think about forwarding with << >> marks. If you do not know about copy and paste into a new mail and blind copy courtesy, check http://www.rrudder.com/safe/bcc.html.

Please attach your credit on personal submissions - full name, initials or however you're comfortable. Also let me know if you'd like e-mail addy published for direct contact. Pen names OK too, I'm the only one who needs to know who are if for any reason your own name would cause difficulty.

I do try to answer all mail within 24 hours. If you do not hear from me in two or three days, it's likely the mail was lost - please try again. If you check and find your mail deleted, it could be because you saved me the trouble of opening one of many duplicates by using a clear subject line - thanks.

They're saying nice things

I don't think Cathy would mind - swiped the above from a recent Sunday strip. About 300 years ago I sent her a copy of my first book when she was panic stricken over Irving's parents coming to dinner. Her note and two others from people I admire are here: http://members.aol.com/MsAtte2ude/famouspeopleletters.index.html. Long before that, I had also written to Erma Bombeck requesting publishing advice. Unfortunately I lost that reply but will never forget, "Just do it." And so, I do ...
