Freedom is an American given, our birthright. Thanks to our forefathers, we don't even have to think about appreciating that precious gift ... until it's threatened.

OK, so tell me something I don't know ...

Care to guess where these pictures were taken?

The Netherlands!

British Embassy in Den Haag (the Haege), close to Amsterdam

Go ahead, read my mail:

Hello Martha, my name is Jan van den Berg and I live in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. I just wanted to say that I love your page (http://www.therealmartha.com/USAgrafs/index.htm). I love America all my life and have visited the USA many times. I just returned from New York city, me and my son went to see the New York Yankees. Next month we are going on holiday to Florida, we try to go every year, always have that feeling that I am going home!!

Greetings and love to my America!!

What a nice surprise - especially since the media never seems to tire of broadcasting our unpopularity elsewhere.

All media is terrible, bad news sells. Huge peeve with me - one thing I stress on all my WAR pages is don't believe everything. Once upon a time I thought what I read in a newspaper was gospel - then I went to work for one.

Right after 9-11 there were a few support pics and stories from other countries circulating but I honestly don't remember seeing anything but negativity in the last few months.

You are so right, bad news sells, but we are standing tall, nobody will stop me loving and support the USA. I wish all free countries where united and support the American Soldiers who always have to give their lives to free other countries. If I was president of The Netherlands I would send soldiers too, never let a friend down!!

Believe me, there are still a lot of people in Europe loving the United States. A few weeks ago we had a pro-America demonstration in the Netherlands, it felt so good to see people proudly showing the Stars And Stripes!!!!!!!

after demo.JPG (16735 bytes)

From newspaper, Jan at left, talking with mother and daughter participants after the demonstration.

The reason for the demonstration was backing the USA in Iraq, there is so much misinformation by the press that people turning their back to the U.S., we felt that we had to do something, and we did! Because of the USA lots of people live in freedom all over the world, including me, so I will never forget. I am proud that I did a little thing for my favorite America, Land that I love.

For the rest of my life I will backing the Greatest Country in the World. You never let us down in history, I will never let America down.

I have visited the USA more than 25 times, no terrorist can stop me!

Jan's words certainly made my day - the least I can do is say

and encourage all to pass along. Every man and woman now in uniform needs to see this page, and don't forget our veterans. The note below would be the best reason, and should make it obvious why I do what I do.

First though, this completely blew me away.

Hi Martha,

Got your link from one of the graphic groups I'm in. God do I wish there were more Jans abroad. I'm a disabled Marine Vietnam vet. Jan's comments were a lot better than what the men received from our own country when they came home. It is really great to have someone from another country like Jan to support our country the way he does. I for one vet thank him very much for that support. Please pass this on to him,

Back to Jan after the latest (Mid-June '05) encouraging words:

Heyyy Hallo,

First, hang with me here for a sec ...  if you don't recognize the below as Dutch, welcome to the club. Fortunately Helen did and directed me to a translator site, another story for later. More fortunately, after asking for a translation (directly below) from the sender, everybody was less puzzled ... which is also another story and an excellent lesson in miscommunication.

Ik heb net je website gezien en......ik vind het in 1 woord ...GEWELDIG!!!

Sorry, zal me eerst even netjes voorstellen *grinnik*.

THE DUTCH, and we are DAMN proud of it TOO!!

Hele Hartelijke Groetjes,

Liza

Hi Martha,

Oops, I am so very sorry, I thought you were Dutch .

I just visit your Website en I think it's AWESOME!!!!

Sorry, how rude, I first have to introduce myself to you *lol*

I am Liza en just like you a Dutch supporter of the American troops.

Since day one I have stood behind the American, Australian and English troops when they invaded Iraq.

When I saw the first pictures on CNN my heart did go out to all these man and woman who were so far away from home and had a war to fight out.

To make a very long story short ... I just couldn't bear to sit on the couch doing nothing for these men and women so I thought I am going to search on the Internet and see what I can find to support these guys and girls.

Well that wasn't so hard, I did find an American troop support group and it was possible to adopt service men and women, and that is just what I did!! I adopted tons of Soldiers, Marines and Sailors and started sending packages all the way from here. It was such a shame that I couldn't find English troops, only American and Australians but ... at least I was doing something.

I learned very quick that America was very well provided with weapons and other material, but to be honest their troops weren't so well provided, they had a very, very tough time. I shall spare you the horror stories but if I say that some parents begged or even lent money to give their son or daughter a bullet proof vest than I think you know enough.

I did what I could, sending tons of letters and packages out that contained a lot of food (most troops had to live on MREs [Meals Ready to Eat], and you can imagine that it was not very tasty). So, my living room was full with boxes with food, candy, reading material, CDs and DVDs and I even sent some portable DVD players over together with a video recorder and a huge television, lol (had to buy all that stuff on-line because you use 110 volts and are using other systems than ours).

All right, gonna skip a period, but after a year I put up my own support group together with an American friend of mine. The reason was that we thought most support groups were not safe enough and were not concentrating on the family members from the troops that were serving. We learned that these family members, friends and loved ones did have an incredible hard time and they needed the support as well. And that's just what we did and we have a GREAT group that is supporting Troops and Family.

Today, somebody from our group pointed me to your Website, gjeeeeeeezzzz I just couldn't believe it, you have NO IDEA how proud you made me feel that I was Dutch too.

Many Americans are thinking that whole Europe is against them, and I can explain so many times that this is not the case at all. We are not Europeans, we are Dutch and thats a whole different thing (you can compare it when we say the Americans are the same as the Mexicans).

But thanks to your Website, I convinced more than 400 members, lol.

Our support group is called: Smiles 4 Troops and I do have many addresses of Soldiers/Marines/MPs/Sailors, etc., who are adopted by our members. (Most of these members are Americans but we do have a few from Europe, one Aussie and even one member from South Africa!!??).

I am very proud of this group and it's a lot of work to keep it all on track, but until they all are home, I shall run this support group, because these man and woman DESERVE all the attention they can get and they have to know that they are not forgotten, as well as their family members and loved ones that are waiting for them at home.

Thank you so MUCH for making that Website, again, you have no idea how you made me feel and I was glowing with pride.

Off course, if you want, you are most welcome to our group. At this moment it's still a Yahoo Group but I already bought the site www.Smiles4Troops.com. Unfortunately the one that was going to set that site up left without a trace, maybe you can give the address of somebody who can make that site for us (of course they will be paid for that). Update, May '07: site is up and fully functional.

Sending you a Big Smile from across the ocean,

My reply:

Really appreciate you taking the time to translate. I didn't even know what language you were using. Fortunately a friend enlightened me and sent a translator site. However, it wasn't a big help, especially since the first line came back as your site is terrible! The rest didn't make much sense either but I did understand enough to confirm how I'd taken your meaning in the first place. I know enough about language quirks to realize you meant terribly good (or something like that).

Anyway, the whole misunderstanding shows how easily anything (text or spoken report) can be lost or twisted, which certainly explains why so many people all over the world are misinformed.

From day one, I have been amazed at the support coming from those in other countries who do realize the truth. That's why I had to make the page for Jan's letters. Now, I'd like to add yours (both versions), OK? Your links will be included of course.

Back to Liza:

You made me laugh about the translator thing (your site is terrible!!), lol. You are right, I meant that you had a "terrible good site".... I know these translating machines are not working okay all the time. Sometimes one of our members is writing me a "Dutch" letter with the help of such a machine, it cracks me up all the time, lol!!

I do have to agree with you about the misinformation that is going on. Take the Netherlands ... we only have CNN to check things out, and we all know how CNN is covering their stories. Some Americans are so misinformed that even that they know I am doing everything for the troops, "your troops," they still see me as an EU traitor or Euro Trash. You know that hurts because that is not what is going on here and we surely don't deserve that.

For example, President Bush visited our country on the 4th of May. That is a National Remembrance Day, after 60 years we still honour our liberators from WW II. (The Canadians, the English and the American Troops). Your President made his speech in Margraten at the Military grave yard. At this grave yard there are so many graves of American Troops that gave the ultimate sacrifice and ALL those graves are adopted by Dutch people who clean those graves, putting flowers on those graves and even have regular contact with the family of these troops.

Another example: most Americans don't know that we have send our Troops to Iraq also for almost two years, we also lost Soldiers over there!

We did cover the South of Iraq (Camp Smitty), that part we took was even bigger than the whole Netherlands, lol. The English took Camp Smitty over now, but we are now with you in Afghanistan, I bet most of the Americans don't know all of this and that is because of your bad media.

We also shipped your materials to Iraq with our ships, because we were not allowed to transport it to our "wonderful" neighbours (Germany, France and Belgium). We said ... the hell with it, we have one of the biggest havens in the world, we just ship it to Iraq with our own ships and stuck our tongues out to the whole EU. You see, we have done our part and if it wasn't for the EU we would have sent troops at the beginning of that war. Because of the EU we were not allowed to do that, but we did help you in ANY WAY we could (you even had the permission to use our rockets and rocket installations in Kuwait, and you were in command of our troops and materials that we had over there).

Those Martha, are just a few  examples, but there are so many more examples and I wish your media would show you more of this, so Americans KNOW that they are LOVED and APPRECIATED for all the things they have done for us in the past and still are doing for us now. Most of us think when America didn't start this war, we also had to pay a big prize in the future, I believe in that too and with me many, many more people!!

I am really sick and tired of defending my country over and over again, because I know we did everything that was in our power to help you, it's just not fair. There is no YOU (the States) and US (Europe), we see it as US (The US with their allies) against THEM (the terrorist).

I still hope one day your media will wake up and giving your citizens the right information, the information they DESERVE so all the people from the US can make up their own minds based on the right information.

Be honest, in what other country than the US do you see a Pro America Protest? Right ... that can only happen here, we know we are a little nuts, lol, but that's just us, it's coming from a good heart and I wished we would get the appreciation we deserve.

And now I am only talking about my own country, but don't forget the Italians, the Polish and so many other European countries. They also did what they could to help you out and they also lost troops.

Where the heck is your media in this all? I didn't see it on CNN!! It's really such a shame and I just can't understand why they are doing this to your citizens!!??

Sorry for blabbering the ears from your head, but I just had to say it and made some things clear.

Keep up the great work Martha and send my regards to Jan.

Me again: Thanks for permission to use your notes. Thanks for the info on Remembrance Day too. Jan hadn't mentioned it. In fact he hasn't been in touch for quite a while.

Main thing, our President's recognition is what really counts. Makes me furious when people who have absolutely no clue are so sure they know it all. That's called armchair quarterbacking/coaching - completely worthless. Anger is exactly what made me start the military pages. Couldn't believe how stupid most of the junk going around was. Thought I might be able to get through to few people. Evidently I have and doing "my part" is the least I can do. Getting the truth out there has its own rewards, plus I simply enjoy* doing pages.

Watch this spot for more info about making cool ties (really easy) and/or sending the extras that make life a little more bearable for desert troops, including the K-9s. Cool ties are worn around the neck, they can lower body temperatures by one to four degrees.

"HUGS" work on the principal of evaporative cooling. A pocket sewn into the center is filled with a polymer (non-toxic gardening crystals). Once the polymer is hydrated, the fabric surface of the necktie draws the moisture from the polymer to the fabric surface, which evaporates resulting in an effective body cooler. Super absorbent polymers hold up to 400 times their density in water. The "HUG" can be refrigerated for a colder tie, or soaked in hot water to make an effective warm compress for sore muscles. The polymer takes on the temperature of what it is exposed to. They can be gently microwaved and placed into a plastic zipper bag for use as a hand/pocket warmer in cold weather.

If you don't sew, the green stuff is always welcome. E-mail thehugsproject@cox.net for the most wanted list and direct updates.

Now, back to Jan: The pictures are made by my friend Henk in Normandie, Omaha Beach. Although we don't like the french too much because of iraq, this is very impressing. Here is where our freedom in Europe starts, wished everybody felt that way!

As an Englishman, I think one of the most recent TV images that made ME feel proud was the sight of your President and Commander-in-Chief striding (albeit uninvited!) into a Thanksgiving dinner in downtown Baghdad. For those servicemen – thousands of miles from home and ever-conscious of the danger they were still in – it was surely an indication of how much America cares about the PEOPLE who make up its Armed Forces. I wish the UK had a Commander-in-Chief who cared, even a tenth as much, about our troops!

I am always a little wary of "military" articles/pages/Websites because as often as not, they are written by those who forget that, if it wasn't for our brave servicemen – past, present and future – they wouldn't be able to write the rubbish they do, except from a death camp prison cell. I for one am very proud and grateful to be on the USA's side!

Our garden is directly below the flight path into the USAF base at Mildenhall – I can never work out whether the planes are low – or just big! – the latter methinks! Next year, we hope to visit France (sorry to use the F word!) and, in particular, the Normandy landing beaches – it all happened there way before my time but, as I say, we forget at our peril. ~ Ian, United Kingdom

How great that Jan wrote you that nice letter! And loved the pictures. ~ Sue in TX

Jan's letter was very heartwarming and, I'm sure, did your soul good.

As a Canadian, I find it encouraging to know that the USA is supported in so many countries. Not all Canadians are wimps and fence-sitters. Some of us, actually, believe that freedom is worth fighting for before it becomes a worldwide situation. There were some demonstrations in Toronto and Vancouver. However, I do not seem to be able to find any pictures.

Freedom is a state of being that we need all support. I laud the strength and courage of the U.S. military for putting themselves in harm's way to protect the world against oppressors and those who would threaten us all.

Thank you for spreading this message. I think it is a great effort, and worthy of the gratitude of everyone. You show what is the true heart and spirit of America. ~ Sue W.

It isn't the people of European countries who hate the USA, it is some of their leadership. They are jealous of our power, freedom and ability to give of our wealth to others and, being jealous, it manifests itself in rancor.

It is the same type of jealousy which drives the radical Muslims to hate and kill. They have no successes so they want to drag others into the fourteenth century with them. ~ Gary

Hi, Martha;

I just came across your Website. I thought it was great!!!

I am not an American, but I love and respect most things American, notably the way your country goes, without question, to the aid of any country, regardless of its race, creed, or political leaning, in time of disaster.

I am British and will be eternally grateful for the ultimate sacrifice paid by so many Americans during WWI, a war before my time, but one in which my father fought.

Likewise during WWII, a time when my nearby homeland was occupied for five years.

There never seems to be any hesitation on the part of the Americans. Someone is in need, they have the wherewithal, and it is freely given with no strings attached. And if monetary debts are involved, they are invariably forgiven.

If it were my choice, I would give my all to become an American citizen, thus, the concept of an American burning his country's flag is totally alien, unbelievable, and traitorous.

Such people will never comprehend how truly lucky they are.

Obviously, they are still wet behind the ears, they know very little of life, and will always be a burden to others. They enjoy a freedom others would die for, and they mindlessly turn their backs on it? Having been mollycoddled most of their lives, they follow other liberal ingrates like mindless sheep. Give them a taste of suppression overseas, and they would very quickly find a way back to U.S. shores.

I come from a time when youngsters respected the police, teachers and authority in general. Miscreants were given a birching. Misbehaving at school meant a caning, and further punishment at home if our parents learned about it.

But we have allowed our way of life to be taken over by the liberals, who are today undermining our values and our freedom, and they are getting away with it!

Burning one's national flag would have warranted a horsewhipping, and deservedly so.

We were raised by decent, hardworking parents, who realized that our country did not owe us a living; that we were eventually expected to make our own way in life, and they prepared us for that contingency.

Many of today's able-bodied, scurvy wimps are caught up in welfare fraud, green stamps, insurance scams and frivolous litigation, preferring to get "their share" than do a day's work, and then boast of having put one over on the government.

Today's protesters were brought up by liberal parents, who mindlessly stomp on the rights of others. Their lives are consumed with notions of "all take and no give," demanding that their own needs be met, sneering at decent citizens because they follow the rules to a T.

The playing field is level, but the liberals want to make up their own rules as they go along.

Decent citizens are not weak; they simply respect the higher values that were instilled in them as youngsters. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Liberality has become a mantra to those with few or no work ethics.

But to be threatened and even attacked from without and then do nothing is criminal, to say the least, and, of course, apathy invites more of the same.

I totally agree with the writer who said that peace, freedom, comes at a price. Peace is NOT cheap, and must be treated as a privilege and with respect. And even in time of peace, eternal vigilance, war if necessary, is its price.

If kerry wins, heaven help America!

Sincerely,

Nick Nicolle

My response:

First, to the kerry comment - I was pretty sure it was only a matter of time before his lies caught up with him. Check this out: Top Headlines from NewsMax.com --Navy Challenges Kerry Medal Citation - article did not come up when I searched on NewsMax when updating this page.

If the click on doesn't work, just go NewsMax.com (that's all you have to type into browser).

Of course everybody knew clinton was lying too and it didn't seem to matter. That worries me a little but more and more kerry BS is coming up so I'm trying to believe a point must exist when even the idiots will have to pay attention.

As for the rest of your note, I couldn't agree more.

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. It truly amazes me how obvious and important the facts are to people in other countries when so many Americans can be so blind; and/or ignorant and unappreciative of our history.

Beautiful page and I love what Jan wrote. Also love what you wrote. The more you can get people to understand that the media is full of the worst kind of it, the better. Spread the word! ;-) ~ RM

Speaking of it, I must thank the New York Times for settling the believability question once and for all (referring to the reporter caught plagiarizing, and making up whatever he felt like).

please_note.gif (7869 bytes)

Possibly you've noticed the "incorrect" use of caps in a few spots above. Ordinarily I fix that sort of thing, and punctuation, grammar, incomplete or run-on sentences, whatever. Almost no one but editors actually care(s) anyway, that is, if they're paying attention in the first place (NY Times slam #2).

Back to the point ... enthusiastic cheer caps as well as the down-caps showing disdain for iraq and france were personal expressions, left as is on purpose. I have no editor - only me to please - that's my prerogative, real liberty and most valuable freedom. The purpose here is not defense of foreign policy. Nor is it about magnifying differences and/or promoting misunderstandings due to language barriers. While I do appreciate those who have taken the time to communicate in English, I see no good in publishing USA-negative opinions. Certain observations and comments may be well founded, I simply can not advocate suggestions to reshape "management" - my knowledge of world politics is far too limited.

I trust my position does not sound blindly Pollyanna-ish. Just in case, the reminders included on more than a few WAR* pages (and above) should serve as overall recommended guidelines. One more time ... do not believe everything you hear or see. Media, each and every, more often than not, is full of crap. And speaking of, crap is crap in several languages. Feel free to check: http://freetranslation.paralink.com/ - still good as of May '07.
