"Holly Luna" One very lucky stray momma
Animal Control staff named her Holly (Christmas time). I (Valerie, executive director at "my" shelter) tacked on the Luna (Moon - Spanish). It was a full moon the day AC delivered her to my house. She was scheduled to be put to sleep the next day ... they couldn't, too emotional.
Delivery began at 6:20 p.m. New Year's Day, completed by 9:50 p.m.
Holly is a very caring and gracious mom. She has allowed me to handle every pup, even when she is feeding them. These pups have a better future than most. They'll be spayed/neutered before they're adopted. Yes, S/N can be done as early as six weeks. Even when discounts are offered, too many people do not follow through after adoption. The cycle starts again ... . And yes, males are equally responsible for the ongoing overpopulation crisis. Takes two to tango. Holly most likely became a stray as a runaway following her mating instinct. Or she might have been left on the side of the road when her people discovered she was pregnant. Either way, more than one male got to her - that explains why unplanned litters are so often mis-matched. Sickening to think what she went through, no telling how long out there on her own. Millions of others will not be rescued. The animals' voices are silent. But their cries can be heard if you care enough to listen. ~ Gerry Brehm Back to Valerie: Holly Luna was able to receive wonderful foster care during pre-birth, birth and after. Working in animal control we had newborns frozen, or momma was so hungry cannibalism took place or the pups were so sick they had to be euthanized along with the momma dog. Couldn't imagine a better poster girl for this message.
