Personal
Freedom Thoughts
My
Hero

By Heather
Marie Blakley
For her sister Mandy
When I lay down so late at night ,
I know you're waking to the light.
I close my eyes and drift away,
And you get up to start your day.
You slowly dress and pack your gear,
Not knowing if there's danger near.
Risking your life every day,
For people, oh, so far away.
You're fighting for freedom, fighting for peace,
You're fighting and hoping this chaos will cease.
And I lay peacefully, tucked in tight,
Because you all were ready to fight.
You are the heroes of this day and age,
You are the soldiers who make the front page.
You are what makes America sing,
Land of the brave and the home of the free.
Now, the sun begins to rise,
I wipe the sleep from my eyes,
I know you are beginning to sleep,
Under trees, rocks, and the jeeps.
As I get up to start my new day,
I bend down on both knees to pray.
Thank God, for the soldiers who stand ,
Stand up for our freedom,
Stand up for our land.
I thank God for keeping you safe and sound,
Through those difficult days hope couldn't be found.
And, I thank God every single day,
For sending you, my angel, this way.
I love you more than life alone,
And I'll be waiting, till you come home.
I consider all sorts of
freedoms to be precious. When I walk out of my front door, I feel
freedom. When I work in my garden, I feel freedom. When I can smile at a
stranger, without fear, I feel freedom.
To me, freedom doesn't have to be felt only
in monumental ways. Yes, the grand 'freedom' is to be appreciated, respected
and upheld. Those who earned that, for all of us, are to be honored,
respected and thanked. Even revered.
But, it is in the small - even tiny - ways that our
freedom lives with us. To forget these everyday
freedoms is to do serious injury to the larger picture and deny the
importance that those little 'pieces' play in making up that picture.
Every day, I thank the Higher Power and brave souls
willing to fight for the freedom that I (and my loved ones) enjoy. I never take
for granted that it will last, that it came free-of-cost or that it isn't priceless. ~
