"Ever
occur to you why some of us can be this much concerned with animals
suffering? Because government is not. Why not? Animals don't vote." ~

Regrettably, the Firecracker Dog project has shifted to #2 priority while I tackle current issues. As the dust settles, I am incorporating a range of animal concerns and action ideas in a new series. "Hero" dog news reflects well on all animals. Lack of respect for life started this war - I believe some of the good that will come from everything connected to the core issues is respect for animals and cruelty awareness - it all ties together toward the eventual improvement of life quality for all living creatures.

Standing in the middle of the road is dangerous. You will get knocked down by the traffic from both ways.
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything ...

After years of working with animals, doing whatever I could along the way to prevent abuse or ease suffering, I really thought I'd heard or seen it all. The following started* as simply a brief commentary on an account of an act far beyond the "usual" forms of sickening. Do not be afraid to read on, there are no specific details or gruesome graphics. This page will stand in the hope that those who have become anesthetized to the "normal" will now actually feel the atrocity and finally do something. One person cannot save the world, however, any positive action, just one small step you may choose to take, will help the innocent, unable to help themselves - somehow, sometime, somewhere.
*As you will see further down the page, progress is under way. Slow, nonetheless, every little bit helps.
Firecracker Dog/Abuse
Firecrackers up a dog's butt ... no need for a photo to convey the horror or show multiple injuries suffered while the terrified animal attempted to rid herself of the pain. That's it, the height of human depravity, an abomination beyond the beyond.
There is good news. This particular dog, "Spirit," in this
one case is doing well after extensive treatment. A reception was held
in Spirit's honor August 17 at the Indianapolis Humane Society (see link below). She is
with a foster family, and will go to a nurse who works in the burn unit at Wishard
Hospital in Indianapolis. After a full recovery, Spirit will most likely be working as
therapist with two-legged patients. Recently a segment on "Miracle Pets"
featured another dog serving in the same capacity after a house fire mutilation.
Amazing, how could they ever trust, not cringe at man's hand again? That's
what dogs do.
What can you do? Push this to the limit. Circulate by e-mail, don't bother checking to see
if it's a hoax (see news links below). Even if it was, and something similar may very well
pop up to be debunked, the very thought ought be enough to get the lead out on
long-overdue legislation changes. Animal laws have no teeth. They won't until enough
pressure is applied. Bulldog type pressure - pun not intended lightly - will get
the point across and sticking eventually.
It must finally sink in that any abuse calls for
all-out investigation and prosecution.
But it's only a dumb dog, so what, we all hear about puppies being thrown around as footballs, big deal ... a little brain damage. What's a few broken bones anyway? Cats have nine lives. Oh hell, blow it all off, kids will be kids. Yes, they certainly will - kids who will go on to bigger and better victims - guaranteed. More of a challenge you know, kidnapping, rape, torture ... the whole bloody, grisly nine yards. Fine training program this society has, animals are just throwaways anyway.
Originally published 7-28-01 by Martha Jones. Page will be updated frequently, including action links as soon as possible. I also expect to continue make changes to text as I can think straighter - most of the above was written while livid after first hearing about Spirit. Incidentally, I am perfectly aware that "rectum" would be the "nicer" word, less offensive. Nice hasn't accomplished much before has it? Butt will remain for the jolt value.

The following was contributed by Helen Hufford, the friend who told me about Spirit. Helen's work in wildlife rehab and also K9 Search and Rescue (dogs tracking missing people, see link below) exposes her to more than most people could handle; general public ignorance - people often do more harm than good trying to save a wild creature - and in abduction cases, evidence comes in varying degrees of gore. All of which, sadly, qualifies her as expert. Find other commentaries below link list.
Statistically, we know that cruelty inherent (or learned) in a young person, more than likely will manifest itself in later years toward abusive behavior, most often in those placing no value on life. This can, and often does lend itself in violence toward others in society. When any individual sees himself or herself as superior, and feels the need to express themselves by placing little or no value on a living thing, society has to deal with it. By this I mean that sooner or later an abuser, will and most often does, commit crimes against their fellow man. Unfortunately, the law states that a dog is personal property, how sad. We can 'own,' an animal, and while laws exist to protect dogs against vicious attacks, cruelty, and the like, they are rarely enforced, and when these laws are enforced the punishment often falls short of the crime committed. Inhumanity in any form deserves our utmost attention, while we stand guard to protect our freedom, our Constitution and Bills of Rights, we must first see to it that we as a group of individuals, protect ourselves against those, who one day, may wish to harm us. These individuals are amongst us now, they are those who have not been taught respect for living things and those lesser than ourselves. It is time to teach them we will no longer tolerate this behavior by enforcing laws that exist, and if those laws are not strong enough, we must create new ones. Violence begets violence, and I guarantee, whoever is responsible for the inhuman treatment of Spirit, is or will continue to be, a violent member of the society we occupy. Be on the lookout for this person, because one day, you or your children could become statistics as a result of the same hands that so grievously harmed Spirit. This is a must-read ...
The Pact of the Fire
Lakota Sioux Legend
When the world was created, First Man and First Woman struggled to stay alive and warm through the first winter. First Dog struggled also. Deep in the winter, First Dog gave birth to her pups. Each night, she huddled in the brush of the forest, longingly watching the fire, which kept First Man and First Woman warm. First Winter was severe, so cold that First Dog dared not leave her pups to search for food to fill her own belly, fearing that her pups would freeze to death in her absence. She curled around them, but the wind was bitter. Her belly shrank with hunger, and soon she had no milk. The smallest pup perished, and First Dog felt her own life draining away as she struggled to care for the remaining pups. Fearing for the fate of the others, she knew she had no choice but to approach the fire and ask First Woman and First Man to share their food and the fire's warmth.
Slowly, she crept to the fire and spoke to First Woman, who was heavy with child. I am a mother, said First Dog, and soon you will be a mother too. I want my little ones to survive, just as you will want your little one to survive. So I will ask you to make a pact. First Woman and First Man listened. I am about to die. Take my pups. You will raise them and call them Dog. They will be your guardians. They will alert you to danger, keep you warm, guard your camp, and even lay down their life to protect your life and the lives of your children. They will be companions to you and all your generations, never leaving your side, as long as Mankind shall survive. In return, you will share your food and the warmth of your fire. You will treat my children with love and kindness, and tend to them if they become ill, just as if they were born from your own belly. And if they are in pain, you will take a sharp knife to their throat, and end their misery. In exchange for this, you will have the loyalty of my children and all their offspring until the end of time.
First Man and First Woman agreed. First Dog went to her nest in the brush, and with the last of her strength, one by one, she brought her pups to the fire. As she did so, First Woman gave birth to First Child, wrapped her in Rabbit skins, and nestled First Child among the pups by the fireside. First Dog lay down by the fire, licked her pups, then walked away to die under the stars. Before she disappeared into the darkness, she turned and spoke once more to First Man "My children will honor this pact for all generations. But if Man breaks this pact, if you or your children's children deny even one Dog food, warmth, a kind word or a merciful end, your generations will be plagued with war, hunger and disease, and so this shall remain until the pact is honored again by all Mankind." With this, First Dog entered the night, and returned in spirit to the creator.
What a powerful yet blindingly simple lesson! Gary

I believe, no matter who tries to convince me otherwise, the only time/way animals will have the respect they deserve is when the supply dries up. In other words, when puppies and kittens are not available on every corner, people might have to think twice before throwing away the ones that aren't cute any more. Not so cute that definition of litter.) Cancer statistics in older intact animals are another excellent reason to neuter. There are hundreds of other important reasons and no good reason not to, excepting professional breeders who do so to perpetuate the betterment.

Planning to buy a purebred puppy? Read
these pointers on selecting a breeder:
-Ask about health guarantees.
-Check the cleanliness of the kennels.
-Ask to see the breeder's written health records.
-Puppies should remain with the mother for the first six weeks.
-Be alert to multiple breeds in the same kennel. This could be a sign that puppy
production is the focus, rather than quality.
-Ask about the mother's last pregnancy. If litters are less than a year apart, the breeder
may be more interested in making money than in responsible breeding.
-Good breeders can talk with authority on the breed, and have plans to breed better and
healthier dogs.

Reader commentary
7-28-01: That's disgusting. I sent it
around. The bad part is that now that it is going around, it may give people ideas.
My reply: Hopefully kids who would be the only ones who could get away with it
probably won't see this for ideas. No dog would trust an adult - I don't think so anyway,
but they're used to kids doing all kinds of weird things to them - innocent until proven
guilty kind of tolerance.
Replies to individual comments are also welcome. Will be setting up a message board shortly too.
7-28-01: Reading that was not really the way I expected to start my Saturday morning. I hate reading stuff like that ... what's wrong with people? I hope there really is a judgment day and people who do things like that will pay. I always pictured God sitting on his throne with a big beautiful dog on one side of him and a big fluffy cat on the other side. Wouldn't you hate to be the person who did that to 'Spirit' standing in front of them and trying to explain or justify why you did that!
My thoughts exactly, may I add that and do you want credit? Can be any name you want. When I first heard it this a.m. I told the friend (Helen) if they're isn't a hell for those people I'll make one.
You can add it, don't need credit, it's not very profound. I like yours, if there isn't a hell, you'll make one. I'll help!7-28-01: I can't read this one, sorry. Makes me too sick.
I understand. Send it around anyway if you can. (Also copied last paragraph and asked her to read.) Note to aolers - you can rename page, save in faves as "Superdog" for example, to trick the squeamish.
Excellent points ... well made. Kills me to hear all this. Kills me to hear about child and infant abuse. How can people do these things? I just can't understand. Nowhere in my soul is there room to forgive these (expletive). I would shoot them all myself, happily.
7-29-01: Unconditional love is not a prevalent emotion, except in other species, especially those members of the canine family. If you have ever experienced the love of such an animal, you have been blessed. For anyone to take away the trust, faith, dignity, and loyalty of an animal who will never do more than give to those who respect their right to life, is beyond my comprehension. Over the years dogs have offered their services to mankind. In battle, search and rescue, and in law enforcement, just to name a few. We don't even need to mention how a dog can brighten a day, give us something soft to hold on to in some of our darkest hours, and protect us from harm when we are threatened. If ever a cause was just, this is one of those causes, simply because an event such as this represents what we as the 'superior,' species is capable of, and what we can be capable of in the future when we run out of dogs to abuse.
7-29-01: GRRRRRRRRR!!!!! I realllllly feel that when those who act to harm an animal need to receive the same treatment as they gave the poor helpless creature !!!!! And I for one "know" that if children are allowed to torture animals they will do the same to another human being and not think twice about it !!! (That was the first part relayed reply.) SEND IT !!! This is so cruel and inhumane ... my blood pressure goes up every time I hear or see someone being cruel to the creatures I love the most and that takes in just about all furry, feather, or other type of critter !!!! Nina7-29-01: Remember the movie "Network" - "I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore."
7-29-01: Who died and left man God that he thinks he's more important than any other animal that God put on the planet?
Here's a thought: spell dog backwards, now try man ...
7-29-01: I heard that but I thought it was a joke, that's horrible. You know I'm not one for pets but will not stand for seeing them mistreated. Veda Stage
7-30-01: What they did to Spirit was horrible and totally uncalled for. They should be dealt with, using the same treatment on them!!After I asked about using her name: I don't necessarily need credit on my thoughts. I'm sure a lot more people feel the same way, but don't have the guts to say it. I say, what I think. I've always believed that humans who mistreat animals would mistreat their children and parents too. They're full of evil, deep down. I don't trust people who don't like dogs and cats. They're hiding something. No sense in this behavior, unless they have allergies or something like that, wrong with them. Animals can sense anyone who doesn't like them or is up to no good. When I was selling insurance, I'd walk up to houses, surrounded with signs warning of a "bad dog" and the dogs never even attempted to bite me! At one farm house, the owner came out, saying that the dogs would even bite him, and I just asked him, what he'd done to them, because they were all dancing around, licking my hand, and their tails were wagging. He shut up, and went in the house. We used to have a St. Bernard, and she took out a screen door, chasing a guy that came to see Larry, and chased him to the top of Larry's truck, trying to get him. Later, we found out this guy had been messing with the brakes on the truck, trying to get rid of Larry, permanently. Princess knew, and was trying to protect him. Love, Flo
Good for Princess. Not at all surprising tho - they know far more than they ever get credit for. You are absolutely right about people who don't like animals, they know they know too - busted!
I found this in The Point of Life newsletter: "Spirit will always overcome negativity and the truth will find a way to become known." Hmmm, interesting timing. I had planned to contact Michael anyway as I was already familiar with his views after finding him by way of a quote he offered for use on my Bright Spots series.
My note to Michael: So true, please take time to investigate another "Spirit" - a dog whose recent ordeal and recovery may very well serve to create massive positive social changes, fueled by one higher power in the form of collective thought:
7-30-01: When humans carry out acts of terror and
crime they do so out of ignorance of who they are. All life is sacred, be it a dog, a
bird, a whale or any other form of life. We even kill our fellow human out of deep rooted
fears and hatred. We are still a primitive being in so many ways.
The only answer to overcome the cruelty humans inflict on themselves and the earth is to
understand who we are. Everyone deserves to live in peace and harmony yet very few folks
know the meaning of life. Most folks live with fear and worry. If we can't control what we
do to ourselves, how can we control what we do to others?
We are all put on earth to enjoy our life on earth and we need to follow our souls
universal wisdom and allow our ego's to be guided by a higher reality.

This was a most interesting Instant Message conversation with a friend I refer to as the Crazy Welshman (living in Scotland). Have left it fairly well as it was, sometimes a bit hard to follow as IM chats tend to be but didn't want to lose the general feel. I have no idea why his apostrophes never show up.
Good afternoon Ms Martha
AltMartha: hey - up to it again - Firecracker Dog (sent the link)
Jghowel: Up to what????????
Jghowel: I love wee doggies
Jghowel: sounds like your little horrors are worse than our little
horrors
AltMartha: more people respect life over your way
AltMartha: In fact, would appreciate your input
Jghowel: Possibly......more folk accept dogs etc. as part of the
household and so treat them like friends
Jghowel: we get pet abuse but don t hear of things like this
AltMartha: care to expound, like how are cruelty cases treated etc.
Jghowel: they go to court
AltMartha: it is the single most gruesome yet
Jghowel: can get fines or jail sentences
AltMartha: great!
AltMartha: can you do a real piece for me?
Jghowel: usually its cause of neglect rather than actual physical abuse
Jghowel: I d have to do some research as I don t remember any recent
cases
AltMartha: that in itself is good
Jghowel: heaven knows when the last story was in the papers up here
AltMartha: think because it doesn't happen or it's not publicized
Jghowel: Think any serious cases would be publicised....we are a nation
of pet lovers so would get attention
AltMartha: it tends to get buried here, which is why no one takes it
seriously
Jghowel: I m sure any cases would be bought to the public attention
we go to extreme lengths here to look after animals......some of our old horses are looked
after better than the old folks
Oops, I missed part of the copy - he was saying he would be a adopting a dog as soon
as he retired
Jghowel: one that can drag me home from the pub ;)
AltMartha: LOL, I hear pub dogs are popular
AltMartha: very few places dogs allowed here
Jghowel: we get some lovely dogs from the cat and dog homes...sister in
law had a great one
AltMartha: best place - they know they've been rescued
Jghowel: most pubs allow them if they sit quietly....some hotels also
AltMartha: all the big pet stores welcome them
AltMartha: good, very smart biz!
Jghowel: the Scots are very much doggy people.....more than a few will
bring them to work if there is no company at home
AltMartha: I gotta send ya the page I did with Buster's Pet of the Year
pic from PetsMart
AltMartha: good for them!
Jghowel: sometimes when I go into one of our VP s rooms there is a big
retriever guarding the desk
Jghowel: we have an observant public and the RSPCA or SSPCA in Scotland
Jghowel: the threat of a page of newspaper publicity hangs over those
that do wrong
Jghowel: many dogs here come from smaller breeders with just a couple of
bitches......its as much a hobby as income
AltMartha: gonna let me credit you?
Jghowel: if you think my ramblings are OK
AltMartha: they're excellent
AltMartha: may use just as is, the IM
Jghowel: many dogs here come from smaller breeders with just a couple of
bitches......its as much a hobby as income
Jghowel: one friend travels all over the country every weekend with her
show dogs and then sells the puppies as and when.....they are EXPENSIVE..LOL
AltMartha: trying to discourage the "backyard breeder" is a
big deal here
Jghowel: I forget what they are...its an unusual breed name
Jghowel: well they both have faults....been some scary stories about
some of the breeding farms
AltMartha: I enjoy the dog shows on TV from there
AltMartha: was really bad with Pitt bulls for a while
Jghowel: yep.....they have them almost every weekend somewhere in the UK
AltMartha: think that's had progress
AltMartha: can see the respect
Jghowel: yep....everyone went pit bull mad
Jghowel: don t see many here....maybe one or two in the last year
AltMartha: always speaking highly, how the judges fall in love with
particular dogs
Jghowel: I suppose they have their favourites.....the big show here is
Crufts in London
AltMartha: just saw that one
AltMartha: terrific!
Jghowel: they really put on a good show for the public with demos of
police dogs etc.
Jghowel: and some of the tasks the dogs get to do as well are pretty
good
AltMartha: saw the one with the rescues show too, riding on a bike on a
person back - really cool
Jghowel: yep.....they are clever...good training
Jghowel: it just needs patience
AltMartha: yep - mutts are usually very bright
Jghowel: some are and some just aint.....just like their owners LOL
AltMartha: too true
In response to a specific request for advice on how to handle first signs of "minor" abuse in a kid - pulling the wings off a butterfly or some such:
7-30-01: "How would YOU like a BIG
GIANT to hold YOU down and pull YOUR arms off?????"
That's what I would do. I know it sounds wicked but it's a wicked deed and needs to be
stopped. Also, if a kid is cruel to animals or any living creature, it's learned behavior
after the initial toddler curiosity/unconscienciousness wears off. If parents are cruel to
their children, children will learn to be cruel to weaker, smaller creatures or people.
It's their way of seeking power, after having been powerless to stop a BIG person from
hurting/humiliating them. That's exactly what I'd say on my site, in my newsletter or to
any parent who asked. www.Rexanne.com
7-31-21: "I would be first in line to severely bite the ass of anyone I witnessed being cruel to an animal." From a list, actually in response by Mykael to a different original subject.
7-31-01: Here in Oz we would say "I would kick that person's arse from here to next week." Actually I'd kick said arse/ass MUCH further than that ... I read Firecracker Dog and cried ... but then I used to cry at the stuff IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) sent me too. I also forwarded it but my address book isn't too big ... yet. I don't even like dogs much (and my neighbours' dogs certainly don't like me - ARF ARF to you too, doggies!) being more of a cat person myself ... but that is irrelevant. Anyone who can do that stuff (Firecrackers? HOW SICK IS THAT?) is just totally out of touch with their humanity ... I could never be cruel to an animal and could never stand to be around someone who'd even tolerate that sort of behaviour. I had a friend who wouldn't even neuter her two cats, let them run practically wild too, all this in a bad neighbourhood - I wanted to hit her (but knew that wouldn't get the message across and she woulda just hit me harder, the dumb so-and-so).
On a positive note ... the State Government here in Queensland, Australia has just today strengthened the legislation against cruelty to animals - now the maximum penalty is something like $75,000 and two years in jail (I forget what it was before but it had been pitiful - $2000 maximum fine I think, and nobody ever seemed to get that anyway). There you are, current news, can I send your page to the papers Martha??? I might write an article around it for the weekend supplements (bein' an ex-journo and all, keep my eye in, as it were). Hmmm, an idea anyway. If you think it'd be a copyright infringement or whatever let me know. I promise I won't twist the story - I was never that kinda journo and those sort were part of the reason I got out of the game (or never really got IN as much as a lot of people first hoped) Actually that reminds me of a TV story I did once on the Lost Dog's Home in Melbourne ... brought tears to the eyes, that one did (or so I was told by many). Me and the editor involved really worked hard on that one, I'm still proud of it eight years on. Neuter your pets peoples! You all go hug your pet(s) now ... and Blessed Be, Fiona.
Hint to all - the last thing I'm worried about is copyright infringement.

7-31-01: We're in the wrong country I tell you. Other countries allow their pooches everywhere, including the pubs, and the restaurants. Yes, we are so far behind we must look pathetic to civilized countries who treat their animals with the respect they deserve. Kathy
7-31-01: That is so sad what happened to Spirit. The laws need to be changed. Shirley
7-31-01: Kick ass between their ears so eyes can see and nose can smell their own sh*t. John
7-31-01: It really saddens me to know that someone would be this cruel to a dog. I am a animal lover and would never even think of doing something so cruel to an animal. I cry when I see a squirrel or a raccoon that has been run over by a car. Animals are so dependent on us and trust us and in return they give their unconditional love to us. I have a beautiful Siberian Husky who is black and white with blue eyes. He is a much a part of our family as my only son is. He is spoiled rotten by myself, my fiancée and my son. I would never let anyone hurt my dog. Keep up your good sites to let everyone know of the cruelty that goes on. God bless and take care. CindyThe next came in after writing to the author of a story in Petwarmers e-zine.
8-01-21: I have to say, after reading "Firecracker Dog," that I am deeply ashamed to belong to the same species as the kind of monster who could do such a thing to a poor defenseless animal. Personally, if I were to witness such an act of barbarity, the authorities would be the last thing the perpetrator would have to worry about, because I wouldn't leave that much for them to pick up. Someone would have to pull me off the bastard, probably several big husky someones at that! As someone who survived an incredibly abusive childhood and who has helped more than one animal recover from abuse, I have absolutely no tolerance for abusers, period. I would love to get my hands on the kind of person who would do such a thing! Bastards! Gary LittleBear
8-01-01: "An eye for an eye" is too good
for the kind of vermin who could do such a thing to a poor innocent animal! The
"justice system" just doesn't deliver as far as I'm concerned ... give these
troglodytes to me for a while and I'll show you JUSTICE! If I ever got my paws and
jaws on someone like that, the law would be their least worry, believe me.
I know abuse, lucky for me I found a best buddy who was patient until I learned to trust
again. He's my hero and I'd do anything to anyone who ever tired to hurt him again too -
see that's why he understands me so well - he was beat as a pup too. I have absolutely no
mercy in my heart or soul for the kind of filth masquerading as human that perpetrate
these horrors upon the innocent. I'm sure that God has a special corner of Hell set aside
just for them, where demented giants will pull their arms and legs off for all

8-01-01: This reminds me, recently there has been a story on the TV news about a woman who apparently had a fender bender with a man, did some minor damage, but when they pulled over to the side of the road, the man was so angry he got out of his car and, seeing the lady had a little dog in her lap, reached in and grabbed the dog and THREW the poor creature out into the middle of on coming traffic!!!
I don't have a good head for details, don't remember what state this was in but I DO remember hearing with great relief that at least the court found his crime heinous and he was given actual time in the prison - again I don't remember how much ... seems like it was three months but don't quote me and a very stiff fine. I believe the degree of penalization was the most ever given thus far for this kind of crime. It has been considered a real step forward in legal protection for animals. Unfortunately it did the dog no good.
And, yes of course by all means you may quote me ... I haven't yet read Firecracker Dog but the title tells me enough. In the rural area I grew up in, the cretins thought it was funny to stick in the rear of a pigeon and let fly, sickening. Fortunately I never actually witnessed this and perhaps it was just a (rural) legend. Mykael
I wish these were all just urban legends. Something else to think on: I've said, "Is it going to take a firecracker up your ass to get the trash out there?" Or words to the effect, light a fire under you ... you get the idea. How do we know if a kid heard something like that it wouldn't plant the idea? I will be more careful what I say in front of kids from now on.
Back to the dog thrown into traffic: What if that had been a baby?
It really is pathetic that it takes such incidents to shock people. I do believe that's one good approach to hammer hard on the child abuse connection. Pathetic again, but it is a way to get to people who don't particularly care about animals. There are also people who would never dream such a thing could happen. They too need to be made aware and learn to prepare their children. Animal abuse scenario warnings are every bit as important as the usual what-ifs, don'ts and just-say-nos. Children must be taught that harm to any living thing is wrong.
8-02-01: I dont normally like to "soap box" I think the phrase is, but my favorite editor brought to my attention a most recent case of animal abuse that I find most horrendous ... A poor dog was tortured with firecrackers. I know most of us find that sort of thing beyond belief, but it does happen. I have never understood what type of sick individuals would stoop so low as to harm a dog or a cat. Domestic animals count on us to feed them and take care of their needs, not to abuse them. I won't dwell on the subject, but take care of your animals like you would your children, just because you love and care for your pet doesnt mean everyone does, and that is a real shame. If you're up to it go by Marthas site, she has some very interesting things there. JW, publisher, The Flamingo Times http://www.topica.com/lists/flamingotimes/read
Comments dropped off after the original flurry. I get a lot of "I hate to hear that, makes me want to cry." Don't we all? However, to be blunt - crying accomplishes exactly nothing.
Sad? Get MAD!
This page needs to be circulated and plans must be made to organize and/or at least participate in awareness and fund-raising events.
8-10-01: Just a report that
Spirit, the Firecracker Dog is doing very well and now placed in a foster home. The people
here in Indy were very upset about her.
I did see several extremely horrible pictures of her shortly after she arrived at the
clinic. Her belly and back legs were burned also. From time to time there would
be short films about her on the city news TV stations and, bless her little heart, she
always seemed so happy, wagging her tail and giving the person holding her lots of
kisses. The authorities STILL have not located the idiots who did that to Spirit, but
I'll guarantee you one thing ... I have a firecracker ready for them if and when they are
found ... and ... I know JUST where to put it ... with lots of enthusiasm and 'spirit.'
Jean Craig, "CAJA Bostons are Born to be Spoiled"
8-11-01: Amen to that! And if you need any help inserting that firecracker, I'll be glad to drive up to INDY from BLMTN to help you! J.
8-17-01: Cruelty to animals is one of the most incomprehensible crimes, one of taking advantage of our superior position to torment creatures who usually are meek before our will. People who would do such a thing belong in the same category as those who would assault blind or crippled people--they are criminals of the worst sort. As a parent, I make sure that my children understand that nothing like this is even remotely acceptable behavior, that if they see anyone perpetrating such a sin, they are not only to not participate, but they are duty bound to halt and report the torture if it is within their power to do so. W. Bruce Cameron, author, 8 Simple Rules for Dating my Teenage Daughter http://www.wbrucecameron.com/
8-26-01: Something has to be done to stop this from happening again!! If someone can do this they are capable of hurting or killing a human as well. It makes me so angry to hear about things like this! Reba Wright in Kentucky
Exactly my point, just sent the following to St. Louis Post Dispatch as letter to the editor and the next to the TV station I usually watch.

The media does pay attention to interest numbers.
The following seems appropriate for this page, particularly considering the case above. It's a serious "thinker" all around. The editor of the newsletter where I found it wasn't sure of the source, however, if you want to copy to circulate, please leave author's name intact.
Death of a Hero
by Marvin O. Ashton
The accompanying illustration tells a story my mother told me as a youngster. Don't be
hasty. Weigh things carefully before you strike. When your blood pressure gets up, count
ten. "School Thy Feelings, Oh, My Brother" is one of the best bits of advice
ever given. Beware of mistakes made in taking too seriously circumstantial evidence. Think
before you act. Don't forget that truth is very often stranger than fiction.
This trapper's wife was brought to the Alaska wilderness. She was cut down by death. Their
child was about two years old. To go out in the woods in the course of this trapping, the
trapper had sometimes left the child for a few hours in the care of their faithful dog. On
such an absence one afternoon, a terrible blizzard came up. The storm was so terrible that
he had to take refuge in a hollow tree to save his life. At daybreak he rushed to his
cabin. The door was open. His dog who looked at him from the corner of his eyes was
covered with blood. The father's blood froze in his veins. Just one thing had happened -
his dog had turned wolf and had killed his child. He reached for the ax and in a moment
the same was buried into the skull of his trusted animal.
Like a maniac he scanned the scene. In hopeless desperation he uncovered the gruesome
remnants of his cabin. Tipped over, the cracked furniture was telling a story of a battle
that had taken place here an hour before. A faint cry came from under the bed. Again his
heart seemed paralyzed. There he found his offspring safe and sound. Just a moment of
pause to cuddle his dear on in his arms and he was to determine whence the blood on his
dog came. The answer came just a second later. The sad riddle was solved. In a remote
corner, there it was - a dead wolf, his huge mouth showing fangs intended for the baby
which his faithful dog had saved.
Just a moment of caution and he could have held both his child and his hero dog in his
arms. Remorse took over instead.
Little by little, I'm gathering more info on the sledgehammer incident. Dusty was a shelter adoptee (according to an article found in a search. I was not able to access anything past the first few lines quoting a volunteer who had spent the whole day with Dusty, including what a friendly dog he was). Supposedly Dusty had bitten one of the Welch children on the nose. First question - why? Dogs do not attack unless provoked or are trained to do so either on purpose or in response to prior abuse. What did the kid do that caused the dog to bite? The list goes on ... there's always more to the story. If Dusty was becoming a problem he should have been returned to the shelter - it happens, especially when history is unknown. Certain dogs take special handling.
Further down the page there are several ideas I want to implement by taking this project to nonprofit status to make use of private funding. Dusty's case is another good example here or an abuse "gray area" that needs to be addressed - what about the neighbors who reported whimpering? Had it happened before? Had they seen Welch mistreat in any way Dusty before? Humane societies simply do not have the personnel to keep up with every "minor" report. In some areas, calls are directed to police, which in some instances means the complaint caller has to be identified. OK, the thinking goes ... "Now my neighbors will know I called and they'll slash my tires ... " You get the idea.
A neutral solution, such as anonymous tip lines, would open the door for "approved agents" to make educational visits. Even a letter would serve as a "watch it, we're watching you" alert, see Neglect Letter sample. Simple ignorance leads to hot tempers when dogs or cats start are allowed to run free, damaging yards, getting into garbage, etc. There are a million scenarios, none of which benefits the animal. Neglect, no shade or water or a variety of unsuitable conditions, are all signs of worse to come. Quite often, an offer to "take the animal off your hands," would be welcome. Yes, that animal will go to a shelter, future unknown. Make no mistake though, they'll be far better off even if the "solution" is humane euthanization. Please see Outcome.
Back to comments,
9-01-01: I DO think you should consider posting some of the gruesome pix, protected by a "warning" link, because we're all so darn anesthetized by Clinton/Condit, etc. that we need to be "motivated" into action, especially the legal system. Speaking of which, I was particularly pleased to see that creep in Cal. get a year, or was it three, for dog rage. I think Mo. and KS. probably have good anti-cruelty statutes, they just aren't enforced, sort of like rape and date rape years ago. We have to make examples out of a few people, plus some good public education. This is deadly serious stuff. Jim
Thank you all. Please accept this gift on behalf of the animals you are helping right now and in the future. Use it any way you think best - in or attached to e-mail, on your own Web pages, or simply by letting people know it's available. I will add a page shortly to list winners and their links.
Waiting for your comments, LibbyK9@aol.com - incidentally, don't worry about spelling etc., happy to touch up for you. Please take advantage of this opportunity to express your opinion. It is intended as a forum to represent the general public. I need to know your real name. Please indicate if it's OK to use or specify a pen name. Ordinarily exclamation marks and all CAPS are overused, detracting from any body of work, usually best edited out - here though, power to the passion!!! I'm especially happy with the belligerent eye-for-eye (or worse) attitudes. I certainly wish I could shoot an idiot - two would be better - at least once a day. While no one can realistically expect anything even close to true moral equity, collective thoughts can go a long way.
Note: Please bookmark and check back often. Normally I answer mail within two days, if I don't, it probably never arrived. E-vaporations are an aol specialty, please try again. If I have a question about your comments, I'll get back to you right away. If not, watch for your contribution to be added a.s.a.p.
The following was also generated by this page. I expect more and am working on overall suggestions for similar problems, including specific form letters as well as who, where and how to contact. The key is persistence, call everyone, including all media. Reporters tend to be receptive to animal stories. In many cases, especially true of small, community publications, one person will be the "designated" contact, just ask.
8-17-01: I live in Ohio. And I feed and take care of the stray cats in my neighborhood. Just this past week, some children came in my backyard and killed 3 kittens that were living on my back porch. I was devastated. I could not prove they did this, but I know. 1 day later, 3 more cats showed up in my front yard. They are in the house living with 2 dogs and 5 other cats that we rescued. My husband and I went away the next day and came home to find 2 little baby kittens on my front porch. Needless to say, we are very crowded. Because our daughter and 3 grandchildren also live here. I have tried to get help in feeding and medical for these "disposable" cats. But no one wants to do anything. And the local pound won't take them. So now I'm known by most of the children as the "Cat Lady." How can they ignore this problem? Thank you for your time. Animal lover in Ohio.

I have no idea how current the listings may be, they are just a way to start "stirring the pot" and testing how involved any one publication or individual may want to become once more attention is called to this and other efforts. See below for more details on my plans - I need all the help I can get.

I have just swiped (all's fair in this kind of battle) the following from an article by Tom Lindley in the Oklahoman. It's from an unnamed drug counselor, used to prove a point about "higher power" - "If I wanted to move this desk by myself, I'd struggle with it all day and not get anywhere. But if you help me, we can take it anywhere we want." Right on!
Update: Based on initial response it's very clear I need to take all of this to the next level A.S.A.P. - meaning the whole nine yards:
The project needs a name
Its own domain
Non-profit status
Professional input etc.
All thoughts/ideas welcome, keep an eye on the page. I am somewhat familiar with non-profit operations, will need to check current rulings. I do know it's the best way to handle an effort like this. For one thing, it's a choice between me going out to make the money to support it which would obviously take away from time spent working to promote, or, I can take contributions and be able to concentrate. One way or the other, this is the beginning of the end of public apathy and complacence. I will do whatever it takes - get behind me, beside me or step up front - together we will make a difference.

This Fall, when you see geese heading south for the winter flying along in "V" formation, consider what science has discovered as to why they fly that way.
FACT: As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an
uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in a "V" formation, the
whole flock has at least 71 percent greater flying range than if each bird flew on its
own.
LESSON: People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are
going more quickly and easily because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.
FACT: When a goose flies out of formation, it
suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone. It quickly gets back into
formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front of it.
LESSON: If we have as much common sense as a goose, we stay in formation with those headed
where we want to go. We are willing to accept their help and give our help to others.
FACT: When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates
back into the formation, and another goose flies to the point position.
LESSON: It is sensible to take turns doing the hard and demanding tasks and sharing
leadership. As with geese, people are interdependent of each others skills, capabilities,
and unique arrangements of gifts, talents, or resources.
FACT: The geese flying in formation honk from behind
to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.
LESSON: In groups where there is encouragement, the production is much greater. The power
of encouragement (to stand by one's heart or core values and encourage the heart and core
of others) is the quality of honking we seek. We need to make sure our honking is
encouraging and not discouraging.
FACT: When a goose gets sick, wounded, or shot down,
two other geese will drop out of formation with that goose and follow it down to lend help
and protection. They stay with the fallen goose until it dies or is able to
fly again. Then, they launch out on their own, or with another formation to catch up with
their flock.
LESSON: We must stand by our colleagues and each other in difficult times as well as in
good.

Again, I need to check into current details, and in the meantime, I can at least take pledges. Cash is top priority (postage, basic office supplies, the domain costs - set up and maintenance/hosting fees, dedicated phone lines - those are all bottom line necessities), donations of services or products for auction fund-raising are next in line, just about anything is workable. Use your imagination. At this point I'm not sure which comes first, the bank account or the license(s). A stack of printed e-mails would go a long way up front (or snail address is Martha Jones, 11469 Olive Blvd. #236, St. Louis, MO 63141 - add your business letterhead* to the fight). Please include your full name and address and specific contribution intent. I will not make any information given available to any outside source or use for any other purpose. LibbyK9@aol.com - I would like Miss Liberty (in spirit) to be the other official mascot - pretty cool I think, in memory of all she (the real dog) did for general education and spay/neuter funding: Lib Money, LPN, Licensed Practical Noogiest and Dog's Eye View, hosted by Miss Liberty, ME (Mutt Extraordinaire). Lib was the friendliest dog on the planet, we'd set up her "Monster Kisses" booth at all kinds of events and charge a buck per smackeroo - if you have a super face-washer, try it! Always a hit - you can give the money to any organization you like. Take along a Polaroid camera and charge per pic too. That's just one idea, watch for more and send yours too.
I would also appreciate ideas for the name. I'm thinking about SLAP (Support/Stricter Legislation/Laws for Animal Protection/Abuse Punishment. Could also add "R" for Reform as in SLAPR. I would like an easy to remember URL for whatever dot com, org or whatever new extensions that may be available. In any case, would also stand for "no more just a slap on the hand." Right now I'm using JAAM (Jail for Animal Abuse Mandatory).
I believe a day needs to be designated as a goal for one international day of action, including education, thought/prayer and contacts. That will involve a mass mailing, central and individual by snail mail and E, alerts to all media, politicians, law enforcement agencies, other animal groups, individual work force involvement, awareness and fund-raising events, recruitments for local chapters - the list goes on. Start talking about it now, participation is the key to success. July 6 was the day Spirit's story appeared on the news. The 6th or the 4th would be appropriate. Miss Liberty has already approved the choices :) She'll be there in spirit cheering us all on wearing her Stars and Stripes. This will be a major step for freedom from ignorance.
*Some of the reasons a separate domain, dependable ISP and hook ups are necessary to do the job correctly:
Graphics take up a lot of space (all contributors will be credited), I also need plenty of room to archive news stories and other articles of interest - negative and positive, personal rescue stories, pics of donated items, eventually there can be support and reward merchandise like pins and T-shirts ... again, the list goes on. A professional logo is also needed - so much more.
I'd like to see this go as far as being able to offer some kind of insurance/legal assistance for hot-car incidents when breaking a window is necessary, establishment of abuse hot-lines for anonymous callers, empowered agents to follow up, school programs and the like. There are a million possibilities/issues on my mind that will be addressed when priorities are settled.
If I was thinking about donating to an organization that consisted of one person, I would like to know that person a little better. I will add any questions you have about my background, qualifications or anything else you care to ask to a new page with my answers (which could in certain cases be a referral). In the meantime, please visit TheRealMartha.com - follow the links to indexes for a variety of editorial, humor, real easy recipes for real busy, real people and assorted "side-jobs" - gawd only knows what else you might find. I've been living on the Web since summer '97. One of these days I'll get around to sprucing up the early pages done under aol duress, I have learned a few neat tricks since, hope you enjoy. In any case, that's me, warts and all.
Back to the subject of separate domains, I'm fairly certain the weather will be cooled off before I have a chance to get anything done on other pages, might as well put these here. Terrifically cool ideas ...
Help your furry friend beat the heat - with this delicious treat!
Enjoy the summer air while providing
creature comforts. Many animal shelters need volunteers to walk their dogs. The dogs
greatly benefit from the exercise and the companionship, and so do we.
From "Summertime Soul Snacks" by Susie
Michelle Cortright, founder and publisher of Momscape,
an online magazine devoted to nurturing the nurturers (found in MommieMail@aol.com). Don't forget, shelters need the help all year.
What else you can do after circulating this page ...
First, keep your eyes open. Report any animal abuse to the authorities. We are compelled by law to report child abuse, animals have no voice either, it's up to us to speak for them.
This gave me the best kind of chills - I sent the link with a request to forward to several lists, one editor also included: A member of ours, MsAtte2ude (just another screen name), as many of you may recall, has her own web sites. She recently sent me a link about our "not disposable" friends - animals. The particular link deals with a dog and, although many of you might think it strange, I am requesting prayers for all animals everywhere that they might be properly taken care of and loved.
After I asked if I could credit and to use the above wording (hint, hint): Although I no longer am able to have animals myself, allergies, I have always gone into a rage whenever I hear of the mistreatment of animals - ColleenFrom Beth, Whether or not you are Jewish, you can view the Wailing Wall in real time and even get your message placed there for free by a Rabbinical school project. Hey, every little bit helps and supposedly God promised to read all the messages placed in the Wall for all eternity. Click here: The Jerusalem Post - Jewish.com
Like Beth said, why not? I just sent one, 8-11-01. It's rather weird how things have been "showing up." Right about the time of Spirits ordeal, my sister-in0law sent a huge box of fabric and sewing notions. I had been making fabric flowers, using buttons for the centers. I immediately thought of them as "Spirit Flowers" for fund-raising and awareness. I didn't receive the box until a week ago after being out of town. Also inside was a very simple old-fashioned patchwork dog pattern. Perfect for the scrounge-hound that I am to make into "Scrap Dogs" - a tag that seems most apropos. I will add a craft idea page shortly with pics and instructions.
I would rather spend time on something like the above than anything else that comes to mind. First priority remains establishing a separate domain, including reliable mail service. Response to correspondence already sent has been disappointing. I do know some media filter out aol mail. Also, no matter the subject line, a generic @aol.com return address does not grab attention.
I am investigating a new service, http://capitoladvantage.com/h/, which lists all public officials and various ways to contact, including form e-mail. There is a charge to set up customized links for various organizations, however anyone can use the zip code search service for contact addresses.
Would appreciate any further info/input from anyone who has used the service.

"A Prayer For Animals"
Hear our Humble prayer, O God,
for our friends the animals,
especially for animals who are suffering;
for any that are hunted or lost
or deserted or frightened or hungry;
for all that must be put to sleep.
We entreat for them all Thy mercy
and pity, and for those who deal with
them we ask a heart of compassion
and gentle hands and kindly words.
Make us be true friends to animals
and so share the blessing
of the merciful.
Albert Shweitzer
John Zeits, a
23-year-old private contractor from Odenton, was convicted and sentenced by Judge David S.
Bruce in Glen Burnie District Court after a four-hour trial. Zeits will also be required
to take an anger-management class and pay Max's medical bills, which total $1,756.59.
Zeits and his wife testified that Max bit their 16-month-old daughter under the eye while
she was playing with the spaniel-setter. Zeits rushed home from work and immediately
attacked the dog, cutting his throat with a utility knife, lifting him in the air and
throwing him to the ground, and then stabbing the convulsing animal in the head. He dumped
Max in the woods a mile from his house.
"I was in a fit of rage," a tearful Zeits said. "I did what I did because I
wanted to make sure he would never hurt a child ever again."
"Do you know how to call animal control? Do you know how to call the pound?"
responded prosecuting attorney Michael Dunty, who sought a six-month sentence.
Dunty called several witnesses to the stand, including Suzanne Andreas, who brought the
bleeding, nearly comatose dog to Severn Square Veterinary Hospital, and Patrick Holden,
the veterinarian who saved Max's life by performing five hours of surgery.
Max still faces an uncertain future. He has spent nine months in the Anne Arundel County
Animal Control shelter in Millersville since getting out of the hospital, and several
people have expressed interest in adopting him. But Zeits's father wants to keep the dog,
and he is entitled to fight for custody in court if Animal Control turns down his request.
Stick your nose in whenever you can, write to the reporter (or others involved) above for instance or do something like what I did after the following ran in a favorite e-zine:
Free to Good HomeI didn't think to save her personal response to me, the gist was drawing the line at using disclaimers on jokes. She also reminded me that she often ran a reminder individually and promised to follow up again. This appeared in the next issue:
A member wrote in to tell me that a joke we sent out wasn't so funny, because it talked about giving away puppies "free to a good home." I still think the joke is cute ... placing the "ugly" puppy easily, over and over ... but "free to a good home" is a BAD idea ... so just to balance the scales, we're going to tell you why.
The Tragedy of "Free To Good
Home"
Most people have good intentions when they advertise a cat or dog as "Free To Good
Home". They care what happens to the animal and are not interested in making money.
All they want to do is find a nice family that is willing to give the pet a loving,
responsible home.
The tragedy occurs when the animal is mistakenly put into a situation where it is
neglected, abandoned, abused, or even sold for lab experimentation. Sadly, this sort of
thing happens thousands of times each day across America.
Giving any pet away is misguided. People tend not to value what they don't pay for. If you
charge a nominal fee of $35-$45 or more for an animal, the new owner is more likely to
take their commitment to the pet seriously. A free pet is a disposable pet!
Paying a fee for a pet shows good faith on the part of the new owner and demonstrates
their willingness to properly care for the animal. The truth is, there is no such thing as
a "free" pet anyway. By the time a cat or dog is checked out by a vet, including
shots, worming, health testing, and spay/neuter, a "free" pet will easily cost
in excess of $100, and that's just for starters. A responsible person who would properly
take care of an animal will understand this and will not be opposed to paying a reasonable
fee for a healthy pet, especially if some or all of these health items have already been
taken care of.
Still not convinced? Then ask yourself these questions, "If a person cannot afford to
pay an adoption fee for a pet, how will they be able to afford the normal expenses of
proper pet care? And how will they ever afford vet bills when the pet gets sick?"
If you are uncomfortable with asking a fee for the pet, consider including food, toys,
supplies, etc. as an added incentive. The idea is not to make a profit, but to ensure the
good intentions of the new owner. In any event, the animal should be "fixed" and
have its "shots" before it is adopted out and these costs alone can easily equal
$45 or more. Use the adoption fee to recoup your expenses.
One final thought on this subject - if you absolutely don't want to take any money
yourself, ask the adopter to make the check out to a local animal shelter or SPCA instead.
These organizations can surely use the help!
What can happen to a pet that is given free to a casual, uncommitted owner?
Abandoned to the streets: This is the most likely scenario that occurs when an uncommitted
owner tires of a pet. Street animals suffer every day of their short lives. The end always
comes painfully, either from violent trauma or from lingering disease.
Handed over to Animal Control and euthanized: People who do not take their
responsibilities seriously always take the easy way out!
Marginally owned: The pet will not be cared for properly and is often allowed to roam
the streets.
Abused: The owner will not make the effort to properly train the animal. Often this leads
to inappropriate responses from the owner and abuse of the pet when it
"misbehaves".
Next, we would like you to be aware that there are dishonest people who routinely obtain
animals for profit by fraudulently answering "Free To Good Home" ads. They are
usually very persuasive and friendly. They know all the "right" answers to your
questions because they do this sort of thing on a regular basis. Some may even bring their
kids along to make you think they are a loving family!
The most important thing you can do to discourage this kind of person is to charge an
adoption fee! This makes it much more difficult for them to realize a profit so they
will usually not bother contacting you.
What can happen to an animal if you let one of these con artists have it?
Used to "live train" fighting dogs. The animal you expected to be a pet is used
to bait a fighting dog and is literally torn to pieces.
Sold at flea markets or auctions to anybody who happens along. Most of the time these
animals are neglected, kept in cramped, unsanitary conditions and often become sick and
diseased.
Sold to a class-B dealer who then resells the animal to a research facility. People who
practice the despicable act of rounding up strays to sell them are referred to as
"bunchers." At the research facility, the animal may suffer abuse and most
likely will be euthanized after they are finished with it.
Used for breeding stock in a "puppy mill." The living conditions in most of
these establishments are deplorable. Bitches have continuous litters, one after the
another.
Used as live food or bait for exotics like snakes or alligators.
Sacrificed in cult rituals. Some people find this hard to believe, but the FBI has many
files documenting this kind of activity in our country.
How can you help to prevent these tragedies?
Convince your local newspapers to post warnings in their pet classified sections! A lot of
papers across the country are already doing this.
Call "Free to Good Home" ads and warn them! Check newspapers regularly and let
people know what could happen to their pet and tell them how to prevent this avoidable
situation.
Advise people not to adopt out pets at Halloween! Solid black and solid white cats are
especially in danger at this time of the year. Cult members and vicious pranksters
are on the lookout for animal victims. It is a common practice of most shelters and rescue
organizations to never adopt out black or white cats during the Halloween season.
Pass on these tips to persons who are adopting out animals:
Don't give pets away! Reference the reasons previously given in this article.
Be sure to "fix" the pet before adoption to prevent more "Free To Good
Home" ads! Find out if the local humane or others will spay or neuter the animal for
a reasonable cost. Use the adoption fee to recoup your money.
The most important thing you can do to stop animal abuse is to spay or neuter your pets!
Use a Pet Adoption Agreement! Please don't let the animal out of your door without a
signed adoption agreement! This will usually stop dishonest people in their tracks.
Wow, I was impressed, didn't miss one point - wrote to say so and thank the editor, also to request permission to reprint on another series that features critter goodies.
The article was something I had in an old file from our rescue group ... I can't even remember now who wrote it. So don't worry about credit ... just pass it on.
Maybe it already did some good - very encouraging to see "neighbor's cat had kittens in our yard, free to good home" - last night as a matter of fact. Like the joke, it's a subtle hint. Those people were trying to do what they thought was right and did not want to be held responsible for the neighbor's neglect, including not having the cat spayed. People absorb the printed word in a variety of positive and negative terms. I objected to the joke because in a way it said "OK, now if you have this problem, here's what you can do." Load off - not cool. Yes, that could be taken as my "paranoia" - fine with me, spay/neuter is my thing. I will continue to push education any which way I can - hook, crook or nutty-in-I-don't-care-whose-opinion (makes excellent argument material, you always win). Until you try it you'll have no idea how completely wonderful it feels taking just one momma out of biz.
Plenty of room on this project for your stories, background is always interesting too. On that very subject, my parents were so mean not "letting" our dogs have puppies. Thank goodness they were enlightened. Once I was old enough to understand statistics, I graciously forgave the folks. It amazes me every day how many people are still operating under the old wives' tales (see S/N link below).
To be honest, one of the few nice things I can say about my upbringing was respect for animals, they always were part of the family. Many times I had only the dog to tell my troubles to and of course they all listened and let me know everything was going to be all right. I miss each one almost every day and truly look forward to one helluva party if the Rainbow Bridge is a real deal.
There have been a few times having a dog was impractical. There were other miserable situations and living conditions that had to be to keep the dog. "Why don't you get rid of the dog?" Simple shut-'em-up, "Why don't you get rid of your kids." Bottom line, I like almost any dog better than most people I meet. There's a great line to the effect of striving to be the person your dog thinks you are - Buster seems to think I'm OK, most of the time anyway - what more could anyone ask for? Sometimes he even moves over so I have almost all the room I'd like in his bed :)

I know the Web is the best thing ever to happen for animals - my sister who works rescue is always running around four states delivering and picking up matches arranged by newsletters, e-zines and message board posts. Some years ago I was more physically active and will be again as soon as my traveling comes to a halt. In the meantime, I do what I can on the computer and am rewarded almost daily. The boss dogs always have more mail than me :) Some pages are strictly critter:*

Send any appropriate links you have: LibbyK9@aol.com, please use a clearly defined subject line.
"Hey there, hi, this is great ... " subject lines do not cut it, spammers use those. Due to at least 10 tons of junk to sort every day - when I don't recognize sender name and subject line is not clearly defined, I delete. Downloads, from anyone, even you my friend, also have to be automatic deletions. Most people do not realize their scanners can't catch the latest virus/worms. Embedded images or copies of doc. files are welcome. Typing in all caps is not. It's extremely irritating and should never be used unless you mean to be screaming, which is even more irritating. I will not read, no matter the subject. If you have a great article or essay you haven't seen everywhere, go ahead and send the first few lines. I will ask you to retype the whole thing if I don't already have it in proper form. BTW, double spaces between sentences, broken lines or any sloppy spacing are also major editing pains. Don't even think about forwarding with << >> marks. If you do not know about copy and paste into a new mail and blind copy courtesy, check http://www.rrudder.com/safe/bcc.html.
Please attach your credit on personal submissions - full name, initials or however you're comfortable. Also let me know if you'd like e-mail addy published for direct contact. Pen names OK too, I'm the only one who needs to know who are if for any reason your own name would cause difficulty.
I do try to answer all mail within 24 hours. If you do not hear from me in two or three days, it's likely the mail was lost, please try again. If you check and find your mail deleted, it could be because you saved me the trouble of opening one of many duplicates by using a clear subject line - thanks.
